GTA IV actor causes royalty storm...
...Well, storm in a teacup anyway. According to this piece from the New York Times, unknown actor Michael Hollick who voices GTA IV lead character, Niko Bellic, feels a little aggrieved that he won't be getting a share of the $600 million spoils (so far) from sales of the game. Hollick was apparently paid $100,000 over a period of 15 months for voicing obscenities into a microphone. But unlike with TV or the movies, actors don't get any royalties from game sales.
It seems the Screen Actors Guild may soon be making a push for residuals (more here), but do voice actors really deserve the same treatment as screen performers? I don't think so. Games aren't actor-centered, voice artists are tools in the process, like human versions of 3D Studio Max. Why is their talent any more valid or important than the artists who create the character models? Sure, there are some excellent actors working in games, and several add real individualism and personality to their roles, but none of the people who bought GTA IV did it to catch the latest performance of Mr Hollick.

Welcome to the GTA IV online community.
Grand Theft Auto IV is a sandbox-style action-adventure video game developed by Rockstar North. It is the ninth title in the Grand Theft Auto series and the first in its fourth generation.
The game is set in a redesigned rendition of Liberty City, a fictional city based heavily on modern day New York City. It follows Niko Bellic, a veteran of the Bosnian War and of Eastern European ethnicity, who comes to the United States in search of the American Dream, only to find his cousin has lied about the wealth that was promised to be awaiting him. Like other games in the series, GTA IV features "open-world" gameplay that gives the player more control over their playing experience. GTA IV is the first console game in the series to feature an online multiplayer mode, which contains fifteen different game types.

GTA IV Hits Guinness World Records
Grand Theft Auto IV has already qualified for Guinness World Records as Highest Grossing Video Game in 24 Hours and Highest Revenue Generated by an Entertainment Product in 24 Hours.
Grand Theft Auto IV racked up the units and bucks as soon as it went on sale on April 29th, but it made its creators very happy when it was announced yesterday that the video game, that’s barely in the stores, had broken two world records.
Guinness World Records announced that the game had qualified for records as Highest Grossing Video Game in 24 Hours and Highest Revenue Generated by an Entertainment Product in 24 Hours. On its first day of release GTA IV sold a staggering 3.6 million copies, which brought in a total of $310 million.
By the end of its first week, that figure had shot up to more than $500 million. But it’s a sign of the game’s popularity – and the sold-out signs in many stores – that spammers had been using it as a tool to make people open spam e-mails containing malware.
The previous video game record holder was Halo 3, which took in $170 million in 24 hours. The Entertainment Products records were held by Spiderman 3, which took in $60 million and the book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, whose first-day earning were $220 million.

MADD Targets GTA IV Over Drunk Driving Scene
"The watch-dog group Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has set its sights on the rating of GTA IV, primarily because a player can drive drunk in the game. MADD released a statement saying that 'Drunk driving is not a game, and it is not a joke. Drunk driving is a choice, a violent crime and it is also 100 percent preventable.' MADD also is asking Rockstar Games to consider removing GTA IV from distribution 'out of respect for the millions of victims/survivors of drunk driving.' Rockstar replied to MADD by saying 'we have a great deal of respect for MADD's mission, but we believe the mature audience for "Grand Theft Auto IV" is more than sophisticated enough to understand the game's content.' As expected, Jack Thompson is making his usual attention-whoring remarks by comparing GTA IV to the polio virus."
